Take Action on the Seal Hunt
2012 appears to have started well for campaigners trying to end Canada's cruel seal hunt, but there's always more to do.
Following decades of international pressure, for the first time ever, Canadian politicians and media have started talking about whether the seal hunt is over. The catalyst was a recently announced ban on the trade in seal pelts by Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
The importance of this ban cannot be overstated. Russia receives 90% of Canadian seal exports and was considered the most important partner in the rapidly diminishing seal product market.
Although this is good news, now is not the time to be complacent. With Canada already flexing its muscles via the WTO over the EU ban on seal imports, it is vital that the Russian ban remains firmly in place.
Please write to the Russian embassy to show your support for the decision and urge them to stand strong.
