Typhoon Washi, which struck Mindanao in the Philippines over the weekend, has caused widespread devastation across the region. With nearly 1000 people officially dead and many more missing, the consequences for people and animals in the area are dire.

Network for Animals is extremely disappointed to learn that the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has opted to ignore the scientific evidence and widespread public opposition to their proposed badger cull plans and will proceed early next year with a devastating cull of badgers.

13 MPs met with Network for Animals and the Kennel Club on the 24th November 2011 to collect a petition which calls for the reinforcement of the ban on the Filipino dog meat trade. Shiva the dog also came along to deliver the petition and show solidarity with her canine friends in the Philippines.

NFA have given a grant to SCAD, an animal rescue organisation in Bangkok, to help with their spiralling costs in the face of the ongoing flood chaos in the city. As thousands of people and animals have been made homeless, volunteers work tirelessly to protect animals.

We're pleased to report that two dog meat traders have been successfully prosecuted with fines and prison sentences for violations of anti-rabies legislation as a result of their role in the illegal dog meat trade in the Philippines.
Reaction to Cull Plans

Following repeated delays Caroline Spelman, Secretary of State for DEFRA, announced plans for a pilot cull of badgers in England next spring. Despite widespread opposition and experts including Lord Krebs, a leading figure on this issue, coming forward to claim that culling will make no significant impact to the spread of bovine TB, the government plans to go ahead with the cull using a policy of ‘controlled shooting’.
Welsh Cull Plans on Hold

Thanks to a new government and extensive public pressure, including a petition and lobbying from NfA supporters, the Welsh Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development has decided to put plans for a cull in the Intensive Action Area on hold until a scientific review of the evidence has been carried out.
