We're pleased to report that two dog meat traders have been successfully prosecuted with fines and prison sentences for violations of anti-rabies legislation as a result of their role in the illegal dog meat trade in the Philippines.
Reaction to Cull Plans

Following repeated delays Caroline Spelman, Secretary of State for DEFRA, announced plans for a pilot cull of badgers in England next spring. Despite widespread opposition and experts including Lord Krebs, a leading figure on this issue, coming forward to claim that culling will make no significant impact to the spread of bovine TB, the government plans to go ahead with the cull using a policy of ‘controlled shooting’.
Welsh Cull Plans on Hold

Thanks to a new government and extensive public pressure, including a petition and lobbying from NfA supporters, the Welsh Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development has decided to put plans for a cull in the Intensive Action Area on hold until a scientific review of the evidence has been carried out.

In May 2011, Network for Animals gave Cornwall Badger Rescue a grant to help them continue their great work rescuing badgers in the South West.

This week Network for Animals partially funded a giant screen display in Ottawa to coincide with the Canada-European Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) talks. The talks were aimed at progressing a free trade deal between Canada and the EU.
Dog Meat Demo in Berlin

On Tuesday 8th March members of the Network for Animals team joined up with local Berlin volunteers to stage a demonstration outside ITB Berlin, an international tourism trade show where the Philippines Department of Tourism was promoting the Philippines as a tourism destination.

The Philippines Congress passed Senate Bill No. 2541, or the "National Anti-Rabies Bill of 2007," on February 20, 2007. Following the drafting and approval of the Implementing Rules and Regulations in Aug 2008, the law took effect. While primarily aimed at combating Rabies in the Philippines, the Bill also included amendments that dramatically increase the penalties associated with dog meat trading.

On 26 Sept. rains from Typhoon Ketsana flooded 80% of Manila and the surrounding areas. A week later, Typhoon Parma struck northern Luzon. Hovering in the region for over a week, non stop torrential rain from Parma caused landslides and flooded four entire provinces to the north of Manila. A dedicated team of NFA staff spun into action to help animals in the disaster relief.
Free Horse Clinic

NFA provided several free veterinary clinics this week in the Valencia area of Mindanao, an island in the south of the Philippines. Dr. David Turoff, an equine dentistry specialist from California who had volunteered his time, trained our local vet and students on the principles involved in caring for horses' teeth.
